Tourist season is in full swing here in Sarasota and Tampa, and to be honest – residents have a love/hate relationship with this time of year. On the one hand, we love our visitors. This region generates much of its economy from tourism, and we are grateful to live someplace that so many people want to visit. On the flip side of the argument, however, we are faced with long lines at restaurants and crowded highways. Unfortunately, driving accidents increase during this season (typically November through May). Because no one wants their time in paradise to be ruined by a car crash, we have assembled some driving safety tips for residents and visitors alike.
Of course, these are basic driving safety tips which should be employed at all times. But in an environment where tourists and residents regularly mix, they are especially important.
Driving Safety Tips: Residents
Those of us who live here have to understand that those visiting our city may not be familiar with the roads. Therefore, keeping a safe distance from the car ahead of you – which is always recommended when driving – is especially important during tourist season. Expect that our visitors may swerve unexpectedly into or out of a turn lane; suddenly cross several lanes of traffic to turn into a parking lot; or not be familiar with pedestrian walkways. Give everyone plenty of space to correct their route if need be.
Keep in mind that some of our guests even hail from other countries and may be used to driving on the other side of the street. Keep a safe distance around you, and stay alert at all times – even on those routes you travel every day.
Unfortunately, those on vacation may be relaxing with a few pina coladas on a Tuesday night, with no care of work the following day. For that matter, they may indulge midday on a Thursday, enjoying the sunshine and the pool. While it is always negligent for anyone to get behind the wheel after drinking (thus putting all of the liability on them) you can certainly be aware of the possibility of impaired drivers and be cautious. After all, an accident which is their fault can still ruin your day – or worse.
Driving Safety Tips – Visitors
When visiting an unfamiliar town, you may find yourself needing to make quick moves – you don’t want to miss your turn, or pass the restaurant you have reservations for. However, remember those around you are likely not on vacation, but trying to get to work or school. Therefore be aware of your surroundings, and be willing to take a few extra minutes to go around the block or make a u-turn. You’re on vacation! Be aware, Florida law is that you must wear a seat belt at all times – and because it is a primary offense, you can get pulled over and ticketed simply for not wearing your seat belt.
Of course, drinking and driving laws are the same when you are on vacation, so please respect all those around you by abstaining. Call Uber or Lyft if you’ve had a few drinks on the beach, or if you are staying on Siesta Key, check out the free Siesta Key Breeze trolley! Nothing will ruin a vacation more quickly than a DUI.
Pay attention to speed limits, as many areas have high pedestrian traffic and lower posted speeds than you may expect. Speaking of pedestrians, be aware that in many areas on the Keys and around town, pedestrians have the right of way. Look for pedestrian crosswalks and always stop for those on foot, or you may find yourself with a hefty fine.
We are glad you are here – and just want everyone to safely enjoy paradise.
