USCIS Forms and their Meanings

Form I-485 , Application to Register Permanent Residence or Adjust Status
This form is a common form used to help an individual become a lawful permanent resident of the United States, also known as a green card holder. Individuals can fill out this application themselves to receive lawful status through a few ways, notably a job offer or refugee/asylum status. Family members already in the United States can also fill out this form to petition on behalf of their immediate family members.

Form I-130, Petition for Alien Relative
The USCIS forms detail the document should be used by U.S. citizens or lawful permanent residents who wish to establish a relationship with an eligible relative who aims to receive a green card in the future. The I-130 application is the first step, with the I-485 usually succeeding.

N-400, Application for Naturalization
This form’s only purpose is to apply to become a U.S. citizen. To become a U.S. citizen, you must meet the following criteria:

  • Be at least 18 years of age at the time of application
  • Have been a lawful permanent resident for the past three or five years (depending on which naturalization category in question)
  • Be able to read, write, and speak basic English
  • Have continuous residence and physical presence in the United States
  • Demonstrate good moral character
  • Demonstrate knowledge and understanding of U.S. history and government
  • Demonstrate loyalty to the principles of the U.S. Constitution
  • Be willing to take the Oath of Allegiance.
  • You must also register with the Selective Service System if you are male and have lived in the United States between 18 and 25.

Different situations may preclude you from some of these requirements, which is why having the assistance of an experienced immigration attorney is recommended for these critical moments in the process of becoming naturalized.

Form I-90, Application to Replace Permanent Resident Card (Green Card)
The I-90 Form should be used by individuals who need to renew or replace their green card or update information. This can be because of clerical errors, database mistakes, or a change in biographic information such as name. Renewing your green card must be completed if your green card is either expired or will expire within the next six months.

Form I-765, Application for Employment Authorization
Certain aliens who are in the U.S. may file Form I-765 when seeking employment authorization and an Employment Authorization Document (EAD). This EAD card is issued as evidence that the holder is authorized to work in the United States.

These USCIS forms are among the most requested and filled out, according to the USCIS, but this is far from an exhaustive list. Proper filing of these applications is essential for acceptance into any program and gaining lawful status within the United States.
