Hi. My name is Zachary Cole with Probinsky, Cole & Usquelis. I’m going to talk a little bit about emergency rooms. 

So if you’re in an automobile accident, the first place you might go if you have fairly serious injuries is the emergency room and you may think there are doctors there, experts there. They’re going to tell me everything that’s wrong with me. So I’m going to know that when I walk out the door and that’s certainly not the case.

An emergency room’s job is to stabilize you, make sure that you’re able to go home, take care of yourself and follow up with care with another office. Usually if you’re hurt in an automobile accident, this involves going to see a specialist.

One thing emergency rooms do a lot is they will take X-rays and those are going to tell you what the alignment of your bones are and if you have any broken bones. But what they don’t do unfortunately is tell you about soft tissue damage and in auto accident cases, extremely common and in fact often the more serious injuries are soft tissue injuries. Those things are going to come up on MRIs. They’re going to tell you about damage to your discs between your vertebrae, nerve damage, things like that, and those tend to be the more permanent injuries because bones heal very well but a lot of the soft tissue, when that’s hurt, it can heal over time sometimes but it results in scar tissue and sometimes it just does not heal and you need a doctor to really come in and fix the problem.

So it’s extremely important that after your emergency room visit, if you’re still experiencing significant symptoms, that you see a specialist.
