According to the Herald-Tribune, a fatal collision occurred earlier this month in the southbound lanes of U.S. 41 at the Field Road intersection. Florida Highway Patrol reports that an 88-year-old man driving an Acura was traveling north in the left turn lane of U.S. 41 shortly before 9 a.m. when he turned into the path of a 71-year-old man driving a Ferrari.

The Ferrari was traveling south on U.S. 41, and its front end hit the front-right side of the Acura. Police claim that a witness reported a large box truck was in the center lane heading south just before the collision occurred. Investigators believe the truck may have obstructed the Acura driver’s view.

After the impact, the Acura spun around until it stopped between the right and center lanes of U.S. 41 South. The force of the blow sent the Ferrari over the curb, and it stopped in the parking lot of a furniture store.

The Ferrari’s front-left tire detached from the car, and its hood was severely damaged. The driver of the vehicle died from injuries sustained in the collision.

The driver of the Acura was seriously injured. Responders transported him to Sarasota Memorial Hospital for treatment.

Police claim both motorists had been wearing their seat belts at the time of the collision. The accident remains under investigation. So far, no charges have been filed.
