Labor Day, occurring this year on September 4th indicates the end of summer for many people – even if the season doesn’t officially end on the calendar until two weeks later. Unfortunately, in Florida – like most holidays – related festivities cause an increase in car and boat accidents and the fatalities and injuries associated with them. As this year’s summer season finishes up, it is important to remain cognizant and aware to prevent Labor Day accidents while enjoying the long holiday weekend.
The National Safety Council estimates that according to statistics, approximately 456 fatalities will occur over the 3-day weekend – which starts at 6 p.m. Friday, September 1, and ends at 11: 59 p.m. Monday, September 4, 2023.
How to Avoid Being a Victim of Labor Day Accidents
- Plan Strategically: Holidays in Florida mean plenty of sun, water, and beaches. And whether you will be boating, grilling or relaxing, if alcohol will be involved, it is essential to decide beforehand just how you will get home. You can choose a designated driver or have an Uber driver lined up – but setting arrangements up before the party even begins negates the possibility of trying to decide if “you are okay” to drive after the day is over. Here’s a great idea – plan on enjoying your day at a friend or family member’s home and plan to stay over – or book a night in a nearby hotel. (within walking distance so you can pick up your car in the morning.)
- Click It Every Time: While these tips should be intuitive, humans have a habit of becoming complacent about some of the more mundane (but effective) ways to save lives. Make sure everyone is buckled up and in appropriate seats and car seats. Even sober, careful drivers can be vulnerable to other’s negligence on the road, and you want to give your loved ones the best possible chance for walking away unscathed.
- Be Well Rested: Holiday weekends can turn your normal routine on its head, and staying up late for a few nights after lounging in the blazing sun can cause exteme fatigue. This fatigue can become problematic for anyone operating a car or boat.
- Drive Proactively and Defensively: It is always vital to practice defensive driving, but motorists need to be even more vigilant over a weekend notoriously known for accidents. To avoid Labor Day accidents, keep the speed limit and be extra aware about everyone sharing the road. Remember, accidents often involve an innocent victim – don’t let it be you. Stay alert and aware at all times, and assume others may be negligible or impaired.
- Take the Same Precautions When Boating: 83% of boating fatalities occur when the victims were not wearing a life jacket, so a propely fitted vest is a necessity for everyone on the boat. Boaters should file a float plan, keep an eye on any developing weather, and make sure they have communcation capability. Of course, anyone driving a boat should be well rested and sober at all times.
